Looking to jumpstart your career or business? Strengthen bonds with coworkers or fellow entrepreneurs?

Then you should probably treat yourself to a trip or two.

New research by the Incentive Research Foundation has found that net operating income and overall employee tenure is higher when employees are offered travel as an incentive. Productivity also surges 18% or higher on average when those same employees return.

According to joint research done in 2013 at Pennsylvania State University and Texas A&M, we’re also better at prioritizing while away, too. That time and distance away from problems may be able to provide you with the perspective necessary to overcome common hurdles.

In May 2017 Adam Galinsky, a professor at Columbia Business School shared with NBC News that “foreign experiences increase both cognitive flexibility and depth and integrativeness of thought, the ability to make deep connections between disparate forms.”

Miriam Kirmayer, a PhD Candidate in Clinical Psychology at McGill University in Montreal wrote in a December 2016 article that, “traveling can be an exciting and fulfilling experience, especially when we seek out meaningful interactions and connections.”

That’s because travel helps strengthen relationships, too, as per this 2015 report by the U.S. Travel Association.

Although I’ve written about the detriments of travel in your twenties, clearly there are benefits, too. Travel helps us learn more, form tighter bonds, connect dots unseen and plan for the future, and Shopify is one brand that has mastered the use of these components, fusing together exotic travel and top-tier mentorship to help entrepreneurs build bigger businesses.
