Google Maps On Android Now Warns You of Difficult Parking In Metro Areas – Lifehacker

If you’re tired of driving downtown then spending half an hour to find parking, Google Maps’ new feature might be able to help you better prepare.

The feature, which had been spotted a little over a week ago in beta form, will help you avoid parking areas that are busy at certain times of the day. As product manager Jeff Albertson explains at the Google Maps blog, the app will use historical parking data to determine a parking difficulty score. Once you get directions to a location, Maps will show you the parking areas nearby with a rating of either “Easy,” “Medium,” or “Limited.” But because it’s all based on historical data, there’s no knowing what a parking areas current availability actually is. That said, it’s still a nice feature that could save you some time if you’re headed to an unfamiliar area.

Parking difficulty ratings are launching in San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, St. Louis, Tampa, Washington, DC, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Phoenix, Portland, and Sacramento. The feature is also only available on Android currently, but it will likely make its way to iOS in the near future.
